Introduction:

Sharktographer is an immersive VR underwater exploration experience. It offers players a breathtaking journey through the ocean's depths. In this project, our team focused on creating an environment where players can explore a realistically rendered undersea world in a submarine, taking photographs of marine lifes, mainly sharks, to learn about them.

We utilized Unity for game development, harnessing its powerful engine for both standard and VR gameplay, and Adobe Photoshop for intricate graphic designs. Our sound team employed Adobe Audition for creating an engaging and realistic audio environment. And our 3D models utilized both Adodesk Maya and Blender for their works. Sharktographer is not just a game; it's an educational journey into the depths of our oceans, combining the thrill of exploration with the joy of learning.

Environment Design:

The environment of Sharktographer was crafted to immerse players in an undersea odyssey, balancing realism with imaginative marine ecosystems. Starting with a foundational palette of deep blues and greens, the environments were populated with high-resolution textures and dynamic lighting to simulate the ocean's natural ambiance. Interactive elements, such as swaying kelp forests and gently drifting jellyfish, were designed to respond to player and current movements, enhancing the immersive experience. 3D models of marine life and terrain were meticulously created by our team to ensure a rich, diverse underwater landscape.



Interactive Design:

In Sharktographer, players engage with the game by photographing marine creatures. They aim with the VR controllers, focus the camera on the subject, and press the trigger to take a photo. Immediately after, a holographic image of the sea life appears beside the submarine, paired with voice-over narration that provides information about the creature. For clarity, this narration is also displayed as text inside the submarine.



Developers:

J.J, our lead programmer, orchestrated the game's core mechanics and overall functionality

Rachel, our environment and level designer, brought the undersea world to life with stunning, high-resolution textures and environment mesh

Johnny, our gameplay programmer and project manager, ensured the game's compatibility and immersive experience in VR platforms

Kevin, our tools programmer, developed the game's many mechanics and tools which further the player's learning experience;

Diana, our 3D modeler, meticulously crafted all the stunning and lifelike marine life models that bring the vibrant underwater world to life.
